TIPS TO MAKE IT WORK

The enclosed are tips on making your Ciener AR15/M16 .22 conversion kit work if you are having problems.  Our experience is, it is common to have some sort of problem with this kit.

Usually, the simplest fix is to clean, clean, clean...

Some Magazines Work - Some Do Not

This is another common problem.  Check the magazine feed lips.  The magazines from the factory can be to wide or to narrow and you must fix them...

Rear lips: .215 +-.005 wide
Front lips: .250 +-.005 wide
Dead-Centered in the middle

Polish Rough Machine Work

This is a very common problem.  The machining of parts by the manufacturer is unusually rough and will cause parts to bind / not work correctly.

If you are having problems with your JAC .22 conversion kit, first rule of thumb is the polish any surface where 2 or more parts rub together.  Some of the parts are rough and polishing them will improve reliability immensely.

Firing Pin Longevity

Q: How many rounds will my firing pin last?

A: 10,000 rounds is a rough guess.  Some last longer, some shorter.  People who shoot full auto will see them last a shorter time.  If you are lucky, the manufacturer will sometimes replace broken firing pins.

Extraction Problems

Q: Used brass does is not consistently extracted and/or jams

A: Check the extractor lips.  See if there is a burr or was it poorly milled at the factory.  Carefully file off any burrs that you see and make sure all extractor surfaces are smooth.

Stovepipes

Q: I keep getting "Stovepipes"  Why?

A: Check the left feed lip.  If you see a tiny but shiny spot on the feed lip, then you need to either bend the feed lip out or worse case, you can file it down.  If your unit is still under warranty, you may want to try and send it back.

Ammunition

Q: I cannot get my conversion to cycle consistently.  It will fire for 2 or 3 rounds then stop.

A: What type of ammo are you using?  You should use high quality HIGH VELOCITY ammunition.  CCI is recommended by the manufacturer.  We have found PMC Zapper to work very well also.  Try a couple different brands.  If you find one that works, stick with it.

My recoil spring is week...

Q: My recoil spring is week, but I do not want to go through the hassle of dealing with JAC.  What can I do?

A: The recoil spring out of a Marlin model 60 semi-auto rifle will work as a replacement for the JAC spring. Available from Brownells for under $5.00.

Problems Stripping Rounds From Magazine

Q: When I have 23 or more rounds in a magazine, the bolt hangs up when trying to strip off a round from the magazine.  What's wrong?

A: The recoil spring that is supplied with the kit can be too weak to strip a round off a magazine and chamber.  A stronger spring will solve this common problem.  You can get a stronger recoil spring for $3.00 from:

Armalite

Q: When I pull on the charging handle, it will not go back far enough so that the .22 ammo could be ejected or stripped off the magazine.  It seems to be binding on something.  What is wrong?

A: Recent and current Armalite rifles/uppers have an "improved" charging handle (P/N EU0010B), which will not allow the Ciener .22 conversion kit to cycle correctly.  Armalite sells a charging handle that will work (P/N EU0010) or you can obtain any standard MILSPEC charging handle and it should work.  Borrow one from a friend or another rifle to test before ordering one.
