NFA - DONATE FIREARM

Q: Can a person donate a NFA firearm to a museum and get a tax write off?  Can one donate an unregistered NFA firearm (i.e. machine gun, etc.)

A: Yes, a person can donate an NFA firearm to a museum and get a tax write off.  The NFA firearm does NOT have to be registered to donate and receive the tax write off!  There are other limitations that one needs to be aware of:

  1. The museum must be able to accept federal funding.
  2. The museum might not be interested in the item you are willing to donate.  If you have a common M16 that the museum already has 10 of, they might not want another.  You should contact the museum and see if they are interested.
